Gifted Assessments

Do you have a sense that your child is well beyond other kids their age?

What Is A Gifted & Talented Learner?

Sometimes parents have a sense that their child is well beyond other kids their age or perhaps a teacher suggests that your child may be gifted. Gifted refers to a child who has exceptional talent or natural ability; a natural aptitude or cognitive skill. Cognitive testing measures achievement in 5 cognitive domains; Verbal Comprehension, Visual Spatial Reasoning, Fluid Reasoning, Working Memory, and Processing Speed.

The required criteria to be categorized as Gifted depends on the program families would like to apply for some families may wish to submit an application to gifted programs which require a recent Psycho-Educational assessment. Each has slightly different admission requirements, which we are happy to customize for you.

GIFTED ASSESSMENT STEPS

  • Step 1: Parents / Guardians Intake Session (30 mins)

You’ll share information about your child’s learning style, academic history, and developmental milestones.

This is your chance to ask questions and share any concerns with the psychologist. You can also bring report cards, medical records, or any other documents you think are important.

  • Step 2: Cognitive Testing Session (120 mins)

The assessment usually happens right after the intake session. Parents can wait in our comfortable waiting room or leave and return at an arranged time, depending on your child’s age and comfort.

Your child will complete a series of standardized tests to see how they compare to same-age peers. Many children say these activities feel like brain games—challenging but fun! The session usually takes about 2 hours, though it may be shorter or longer depending on your child.

  • Step 3: Debrief of Results (30 mins)

After testing, families are invited back into the room where the psychologist explains the results. All five cognitive domains and the overall Full Scale Intelligence Quotient (FSIQ) will be reviewed. This is your chance to ask questionsand get a clear understanding of the options available for your child.

If your child meets the gifted criteria, most families choose to proceed with a full report (additional fee). If they do not, families can choose to end the assessment.
