PSYCHO-EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENTS

A psychoeducational assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that helps you understand how your child learns, thinks, and processes information. In British Columbia, these assessments are often used to clarify concerns related to learning, attention, emotional functioning, or school performance.

At Coastal Minds, our goal is to move beyond labels and provide a clear, meaningful understanding of your child’s unique profile — including both strengths and areas where support is needed.

Psych Ed Steps:

  • Two women are sitting on a gray sofa in an office, looking at a laptop. One woman has curly hair with glasses and is wearing a light pink blazer, smiling. The other woman has dark hair in a bun, wearing a patterned blazer with pearls, looking at the laptop. Behind them are large windows with city buildings and green plants on the windowsill. There are shelves with board games and books nearby.

Step 1: Clinical Intake with Parents

The process begins with a parent intake session where we gather a clear picture of your child’s development, learning, and current concerns. We also take time to understand your goals, so the assessment is focused, meaningful, and tailored to your child.

  • A person wearing a green sweater writing on a notebook with a red pen, sitting on their lap, with their left hand resting on the page.

    Step 2: Cognitive Testing Session

Cognitive testing helps us understand how your child thinks, learns, and processes information. It looks at areas such as reasoning, memory, attention, and processing speed to build a clear picture of your child’s strengths and challenges. This information forms the foundation for meaningful recommendations at home and school.

  • Children sitting at a table engaged in drawing and coloring activities in a classroom.

    Step 3: Academic Testing Session

Academic testing looks at your child’s skills in reading, writing, and math to understand how they are performing compared to expectations for their age and grade. It helps identify specific areas of strength and difficulty, guiding targeted recommendations and supports for school success.

  • Two young women having a conversation while sitting on a bed. One woman is wearing a purple sweater and headphones, and the other woman, whose face is out of focus, is wearing a blue pattern top. There is a laptop on the bed and a window with white panels in the background.

Step 4: Extra Testing Session (if applicable)

In some cases, an additional testing session may be recommended to gather more in-depth information or explore specific areas in greater detail. This allows us to ensure the assessment is thorough, accurate, and tailored to your child’s unique needs.

  • Two women sitting at a wooden table in a office, having a conversation. One woman is taking notes with a pen and the other is engaged in the discussion. There are laptops and a brick wall background.

    Step 5: Feedback Session

The feedback session is where we walk you through the results of the assessment in a clear and meaningful way. We explain your child’s strengths, areas of difficulty, and what it all means, and provide practical recommendations you can use right away at home and school.

  • Close-up of a hand signing a document with a silver fountain pen on a wooden desk.

    Report Information

You will receive a comprehensive written report that clearly outlines your child’s strengths, areas of difficulty, and diagnostic conclusions (if applicable). The report includes practical, individualized recommendations for home and school, and is designed to be easily understood and immediately useful for supporting your child.
