Qualifying Services Assessments

What is a Qualifying Services Assessment?

BC Qualifying Services assessments help connect individuals with the supports and financial assistance they need. We provide comprehensive, personalized assessments to help families understand eligibility and prepare applications, ensuring access to programs and resources suited to each person’s unique circumstances. We guide you through the process to help secure the support you or your loved ones are entitled to.

During the assessment, individuals participate in structured activities designed to provide a clear picture of their strengths and areas of need across three key areas: cognitive functioning, adaptive skills, and overall well-being. These activities show how the individual functions compared to others in similar circumstances, giving valuable insight into their abilities and support requirements. This ensures that appropriate services and resources are identified to meet their needs.

Does My Child/Family Member Need a Qualifying Services Assessment?

Does your child/family member face challenges with daily tasks, social interactions, or independence? Have teachers, caregivers, or professionals expressed concerns about their development or ability to adapt?

These may be signs that your child/family member could benefit from a Qualifying Services assessment. Persistent difficulties in cognitive abilities, adaptive skills, or social-emotional functioning—even with support—often indicate the need for a thorough evaluation.

Families often pursue an assessment to better understand their child/family members’s strengths and needs, particularly when there are concerns about developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, or neurodiverse conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder or ADHD. The assessment can also help determine eligibility for programs and services that provide essential support, ensuring your child has the resources to thrive.

The first step is to schedule an intake meeting, where we discuss your goals for your child/family member and customize the assessment to fit your family’s needs.

Qualifying Services Assessment Steps

  • Step 1: Intake Meeting

The process begins with an intake meeting, which can be done online or in person. During this meeting, we discuss your child or family member’s learning style, daily functioning, medical history, and developmental milestones. This is your opportunity to share concerns, ask questions, and bring any relevant documents, such as previous reports or assessments.

  • Step 2: Testing With Your Child/Family Member

Next, your child/family member will participate in a cognitive testing session designed to understand their cognitive skills, adaptive abilities, and overall functioning. The activities are tailored to the individual and may feel like brain games, providing a comprehensive picture of their strengths and areas of need. Parents can wait in our comfortable space or return at a scheduled time, depending on your child’s comfort.

  • Step 3: Feedback Meeting

Families are invited to a feedback session where the psychologist reviews the results. This session covers the findings from the assessment, explains eligibility for qualifying services, and answers any questions. Families leave with a clear understanding of their child/family member’s strengths, support needs, and recommended next steps.
